The Summer Olympics had previously been the only major competition prior to the World Cup, but FIFA decided to hold the World Cup on May 26, 1928.
Uruguay hosted the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 1930.

Due to an increase in the number of qualifying nations, the teams at the 12th World Cup in Spain went from 16 to 24.
